Total Recycling Services was set up in 2009 and has been working with Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) for the last 10 years.
Based in Darlington, Total Recycling Services is one of the North East’s leading waste management providers specialising in commercial recycling, hazardous waste recovery and industrial services for well-known blue-chip companies such as Hitachi, JCB and Akzo Nobel.
Alex Foreman, Managing Director of Total Recycling Services, discusses the partnership between the two companies:
We use Northumbrian Water Group’s Bran Sands as a disposal site for various liquid wastes including acids, bund waters and aqueous effluents. The majority of all of the tanker waste we collect from our chemical clients, it treats for us.
The plant is one of the biggest in the UK and can take in a variety of industrial effluents.
We’ve seen enormous benefits through our partnership with NWG. Over the years we haven’t had our own treatment capabilities and it has helped open up opportunities for us to manage liquid waste in the Tees Valley.
One of the many great things about NWG is its location at Middlesborough. With the company being so local it reduces the distance our vehicles have to travel which keeps them on the road longer and reduces the carbon footprint for us and our customers.
The helpfulness of staff at NWG is immeasurable. They are very easy to deal with and you know where you stand at all times. They will always try to facilitate any of our needs and go a little bit further.
Commercially it makes sense to work with NWG. Its prices are very competitive as far as the rates per tonne are concerned. It takes around 300 tonnes a month from us and some client’s waste goes every day.
Where NWG comes into its own for us is when we get a particularly large liquid waste project which tend to be time critical. Even if we have to have our tankers running back and forth constantly, we know NWG can facilitate this.
As for flexibility, we’ve asked NWG before if it could stay open later – and on a weekend – to ensure that we get projects done on time. This has never been an issue. That’s where the partnership really shines. Staff are approachable in that respect and it’s a really well-run site and highly efficient.
On the health, safety and environment side its safety standards are second to none. All of the drivers know the site standards and there is no messing around. It’s of a very high standard, clean and efficient.
